熊本地震が起きたのはちょうど日本さくらの女王がワシントンを訪問中でした。
MIKIMOTO本店からほど近い所に熊本アンテナショップがあり、
レイチェルさんもテレサさんも何か役に立ちたいとのことで訪問して、
レイチェルはスイーツをテレサはお孫さんにクマモンの縫いぐるみを購入。
そして募金もしてくれました。

After courtesy visits, we went to Kumamoto antenna shop
to give some supports to Kumamoto earthquake.
Ms. Bohn got some sweets and Ms. Downs bought
a Kumamon teddy bear for her grandson.

午後からは毎年全米さくらの女王にパールクラウンのレプリカと真珠のネックレスを
贈呈されているMIKIMOTOへお礼に参りました。今年は銀座4丁目の本社ビルが
建て替え中で窓の形が印象的なピンク色の2丁目本店にお邪魔しました。

吉田社長をはじめ役員のみなさんは変わらず心のこもったおもてなしをしてくださり、
お礼に伺っている方が恐縮する始末。来年は代々引き継がれているMIKIMOTO
パールクラウンが全米さくらの女王に贈られて60年なので、イベントを企画し、
一段とMIKIMOTOに感謝したいとシャペロンのテレサが話していました。

その後店内の宝飾の数々を見せていただき、しばし夢見心地の時間を過ごしました。

In the afternoon, we visited MIKIMOTO. MIKIMOTO has been providing
beautiful pearl crowns and necklaces to the Queens every year.
Mr. Yoshida, CEO of MIKIMOTO, and many other directors welcomed us.
We couldn’t thank their hospitality enough.

This year is the 60th anniversary of a MIKIMOTO official pearl crown
gifted to the US Cherry Blossoms Queen.
We deeply appreciate their continuous supports.

続いて在日米国大使館へ。サミットで来日のオバマ大統領が広島訪問を決めたことなどで、
ケネディー駐日大使がお忙しく、マルゴ・キャリントン広報文化交流担当公使が面会してくださいました。
女性なだけにせっかく日本に来たのだから、お飾りではないさくらの女王のパワーを発揮してほしいと話されました。

After visiting ANA, we moved to Embassy of the United States of America in Japan.
The day we visited was right before G7 Ise-Shima Summit.
Ms. Margot Carrington, U.S. Embassy Minister Counselor for Public Affairs,
hosted us while Ms. Caroline Kennedy, U.S. Ambassador was off to G7.
Ms. Carrington encouraged both of the Cherry blossoms Queens to successfully
carry out their goodwill duties.

大使館書記官のお見送りを受ける

5月17日、本日から公式行事開始です。
毎年全米さくらの女王とシャペロンにワシントン東京の往復航空券を提供してくださる
全日空にお礼の表敬をしました。汐留の本社ビルでは昨年に引き続き篠辺社長が
大変にこやかに出迎えてくださいました。今年は全日空が国際線に就航して30周年、
アメリカとは6都市をダイレクトで結んでいるとのこと。益々アメリカとの往来が盛んだそうです。
レイチェルさんもテレサさんも日本は初めて。快適な空の旅でスタートすることができて
とてもハッピーだと話していました。さくらがモチーフの30周年記念の風呂敷は
さくらの女王にピッタリですねとお土産にくださいました。

We started courtesy visits on May 17. We visited ANA,
Embassy of the United States of America in Japan and MIKIMOTO.

ANA provides us round-trip airline tickets every year.
Mr. Shinobe, the executive of ANA, warmly welcomed us at his head office.
He mentioned that ANA was approaching it’s 30th anniversary that year
and now has direct flights to as many as six cities in the US.
Ms. Bohn and Ms. Downs had a good talk with him.
Mr. Shinobe gave us ANA’s 30th anniversary wrapping cloths,
which was Sakura, cherry blossoms, motif. That was very fond of him.

到着当日は日本さくらの会女王委員と共に夕食会とオリエンテーションを行い、
東京での日程のあらましについて説明をしました。

翌日の5月16日、全米さくらの女王レイチェル・ボーンさんとシャペロンのテレサ・ダウンさんと共に、
都内一周はとバスツアーに参加しました。特にお喜びだったのは世界一の高さを誇る電波塔、
東京スカイツリーでの大展望！目を見張るパノラマに大感激。スカイツリーの上でゆっくりと
お茶も楽しまれました。

一番喜ばれたのは浅草観光です。ちりめんさくら模様の小物や、鈴のついた子供用草履等の
お土産を購入されました。また、日本の調味料が欲しいとのことで、薬研堀の七味唐辛子を
紹介しました。自分好みに調合してもらい、木製のひょうたんに詰めて大満足。
存分に日本のショッピングを堪能されました。

集合時間が迫り、runは何というのかとのことで、「走れ～」と教えると、「走れ～」と言いながら
駆けつけ、ギリギリバスの出発時間に間に合いました。息を切らせながら大笑いして、
お茶目な一面も垣間見えました。


The day they arrived, JSF members organized dinner and explained
how the next six days are going to be.

May 16, we took the US Cherry Blossom Queen, Ms. Rachel Bohn and her chaperon,
Ms. Teresa Downs to “Hato-Bus” tour. The tour showed us popular sights in Tokyo.
One of their favorites was Tokyo Skytree. Tokyo Skytree is the tallest structure
in Japan with a height of 634 meters. They enjoyed the beautiful view of Tokyo
over a cup of coffee.

Asakusa was the most loved sight by both of the ladies.
They were able to shop various traditional Japanese souvenirs.

When we were about to catch the bus, we taught them “run!” is “hashire!” in Japanese.
They liked the word and used as they rushed for the bus.

We are sure that the day turned out to be a great introduction for the ladies!
